Garrett Melby is a Thought Leader at the intersection of venture capital and social impact. He began his career as a telecom and technology attorney with a Wall Street law firm and transitioned to venture capital at the height of the Dot Com era.
His firm, Safeguard Scientifics, was one of the only public companies that allowed retail investors to access that booming market, and grew from $300mm in market cap to a peak of $12bn. Garrett chaired the firm’s investment committee and was responsible for driving network effects among a portfolio of over 250 companies.
In the early 2000’s he applied these experiences to the new field of Impact investing. He was granted a US patent for a tax advantaged venture/philanthropy investment structure and in 2010, founded GoodCompany Ventures, one of the first social impact accelerators, where he serves as Executive Director. In 2019, he co-founded GoodCompany’s first commercial spin-out, ImpactableX, a platform for quantifying and communicating social impact, that was named by Fast Company as one of the “World Changing Ideas” of 2021.
